Several uses of crutches

2022-05-17
Weight-bearing gait: when the doctor evaluates the patient can carry out partial weight-bearing walking, it can be converted to weight-bearing walking with crutches. The starting position of the affected leg is to take a small step forward and fall between the crutches, and then use both hands and the affected leg to support the weight. The healthy leg steps forward and also falls between the crutches, and then the crutches move forward to start the next step. You also need to keep the width between the crutches as you move forward and the crutches should be clamped between your arms.
According to the amount of load, this gait can be subdivided into:
Toe-only or light touch: Gently press the foot of the affected leg to the ground, allowing the crutch to bear most of the weight. Imagine stepping on a tomato: tread gently so the tomato doesn't squish.
Partial load bearing gait: When walking, the foot bears weight on the affected leg. The degree depends on the doctor's assessment.

Full weight-bearing gait: Place most of your weight on the foot of the affected leg. Crutches only share a small amount of weight or serve only as a balance.
